| The channel is the outlet (an inlet of course) of the Maratua atoll. The underwater route to it is a steep sided canal which exits across a 100m wide reef plateau at about 25m before a steep drop off. The huge amount of water moving between tides means the area attracts big fish, in fact the site is pretty much the same as 'Big Fish Country'. Sadly we didn't see a wide range of big things, there was a distant black tip shark or two, but there were good shoals of Barracuda. Reef hooks were the order of the day at the best viewing spots as the current tore at the reef and easily rearranged masks, strobes and DVs. We did the dive on the incoming tide... I have heard tales of woe of dives on the outgoing tide where the divers were dragged down and out of the atoll. |
