| Sangalaki is famous, like Sipadan, for its turtles. The difference is most of these are on the surface, the island is the prime nesting site for Green Sea Turtles. At night the frankly huge female turtles come ashore to dig nests and lay many 10s of eggs. There's a permanent conservation team (of cheerful students) on the island who note the new arrivals and move them into an Iguana proof compound where they can incubate in peace before being released 40 days later. This happens year round and if you are lucky you may have a batch named after you. If you are even luckier you might be there when a feral batch appear out of thin air and stampede towards the sea without any help at all. |
