Out around Skomer we were put to work surveying; working out the ages of our scallops by counting their growth rings. Some were into their early twenties and most were covered in thick concretion which made that hard to see. The shells were popular with crabs and all kinds of other animals... it was tricky upsetting as few as possible... 'interestingly' the agreed method uses the top, flat side whereas the curved underside was clean and has the same rings... I'm sure there's an opportunity there! |
